Councillor Justin Warnock said Ireland’s most rural county is Leitrim but it will be Ireland’s “wilderness county”. He highlighted that it is important to get people back into our county and that conifers are replacing people and this needs to be addressed in the upcoming County Development Plan.

Councillor Sean McDermott referred to 8 townlands in his electoral area that are unpopulated, and similar situations exist throughout the County.

Councillor Enda McGloin outlined his view that Members need to be careful with the language they use as describing the county as a wilderness does not help Leitrim. Some townlands that had few residents many years ago have now had a significant increase in population. Councillor Justin Warnock clarified this would not be his intention.
