Councillor Enda McGloin said in the last 10 days funding has been announced for local radio and he hoped ongoing discussions would continue with a view to find funding for local newspapers who provide a valuable service.  He asked that Leitrim County ask Minister Martin to reconsider the current position so that her Department can provide similar funding to local print media as given to local radio. 

 

Cathaoirleach, Councillor Mary Bohan supported the proposal.

15.       Reply from Minister McConalogue in regard to the Beef Regulator and Beef Prices

 

Councillor Brendan Barry said he hoped that a Beef Regulator would be put in place as an Ombudsman would not have the same powers as a Regulator. Councillor Padraig Fallon outlined his support in this regard.

Councillor Brendan Barry proposed that Leitrim County Council support the resolution and he acknowledged funding in Leitrim is restricted and it would be better to have a National Programme.

Councillor Justin Warnock proposed that Leitrim County Council request An Taoiseach Michael Martin and the Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney, to put a resolution before the United Nations to call for a global ban on fracking.
