Mr Kieran Brett, Meetings Administrator outlined the process for appointing a representative to the Governing Authority of National University of Ireland, Galway.

It was proposed by Cllr Enda McGloin and seconded by Cllr Frank Dolan that John McCartin be appointed as Leitrim County Council’s representative on the Governing Body of National University of Ireland, Galway.

Councillor Des Guckian outlined his dissatisfaction with the nomination of the representative who is not an elected member of Leitrim County Council and who he believes does not fulfil the teaching expertise  element of the Essential Requirements as set out in the Competency Matrix for Membership of Údarás na hOllscoile. 

The Cathaoirleach requested that Councillor Des Guckian withdraw his remarks and proposed that he write to the Minister of Education, who sets out the Competency Framework for membership and the desired competencies of members across the totality of the Governing Authority, with his concerns.

She confirmed that Leitrim County Council have followed the required process as set down in the circular received from NUIG and any issues should be addressed to the Minister.  She outlined John McCartin had represented Leitrim County Council well over the past number of years and she was not in any doubt regarding his fulfilling the requirements for the role.

Councillor Des Guckian Cllr Guckian outlined his view that education should not be micro managed by political parties and stated that he wished John McCartin well personally and in his business.

It was AGREED that John McCartin be appointed as Leitrim County Council’s representative on the Governing Body of National University of Ireland, Galway.

Councillor Mary Bohan wished John McCartin well as the Leitrim County Council representative for the coming term on the Governing Body of National University of Ireland, Galway.
